Looking at Washington D.C. today it is hard to imagine it during Jefferson’s time.  Scott Berg’s new book, Grand Avenues, examines the rise of the new capitol city and Charles L’Enfant’s larger vision (vs. Jefferson’s more modest one) for its development.  The book also explores L’Enfant’s rocky relationship with Jefferson.  George Washington looked favorably on L’Enfant’s bigger city, but it would take two world wars in the twentieth century to see it bear fruit.
